Red Dog history

Red dog is not one of the most popular gambling games in the world. It is most common in the United States, where it first appeared in the XIX century. Back then Red Dog game had a lot of different names. However, due to its novelty and simplicity among the players, it did not had much success and was forgotten until the 1930s. Then the Red Dog was revived at the Las Vegas gambling tables, because it was convenient for its speed to draw certain categories of players. Namely, during the WWII, soldiers became the numerous casino visitors. It was in those days that the name Red Dog finally got behind the game.

There is no single exact version of the origin of the name. According to the main version, the name appeared due to the fact that the game was held at the oblong table (resembling a dog), covered with red cloth. Now in some casinos, chips with the image of the dog are also used. There is also a version, that the Red Dog is named after the casino, in which for the first time it was actively played.

Rules of the game

Red dog game held on a special table. Game can be played with a different number of card decks - from one to eight. A deck of 52 cards takes part in the game: from Deuces to Aces, without Jokers.

Several people can take part in the game (up to 6), but in the Red Dog, player plays against the casino, and not against the opponents. There are no "trade rounds" in Red Dog. Winning depends only on the value of the cards (points) that have been dealt to a particular player. So there is no possibility of bluffing and other tricks. During the game, the player needs to make a choice only in one case - to double the bet made by him or not. Red Dog refers to gambling, because in most cases the bets in it have a cash equivalent.

Cards Value

The value of the cards in Red Dog is different from the generally accepted ones in different card games. Values of cards from 2 to 10 are equal to the nominal value. That is, the Three has a value of 3 points, the Four - 4, and so on.

As for the rest, the Ace is 14, the King is 13, the Queen is 12, the Jack is 11 points.

The value of the suit in the Red Dog is not taken into account. Also in Red Dog the combinations of the drawn cards are not important either - only their value (points) is taken into account.

Winning scheme

The amount of winnings depends on the size of the gap in card value of the first pair of cards in inverse proportionality and called Spread.

The Spread is the digital difference between the value of the first two drawn cards, which is determined by the number of cards and the value between them. For example, if Ten and Ace was dealt, the Spread between them is 3 (Jack, Queen, King).

The bigger Spread is, the bigger the win. Winnings are calculated according to the table from the Spread coefficient to the bet made by the player. Here is an example of such table:

1 card difference - 5: 1
2 cards difference - 4: 1
3 cards difference - 2: 1
4 or more cards difference - 1: 1

Course of the game

  • Player makes a bet.
  • A casino dealer places 2 cards on the table with the face value up, so that between them there is room for another card.
  • Further, the win depends on the value of these cards.

If 2 cards of different values and have a difference greater than 1 - for example, 6 and the King will be dealt, then the player gets the opportunity to double the bet. After that, the dealer gives the third card. If the first two cards do not match in value and have a difference greater than 1, then their difference is determined. After the dealer calculates the Spread, he adds a token to the corresponding difference field. Then the dealer offers the player to make a choice: to raise the bet (Ride) or not (Stand). Raising the bet rate in the Red Dog is possible only twice. If the player does not have an opportunity to raise the bet, he can continue the game with his original bet value. After all bets have been made, the dealer places the third card on the table.

Red Dog Table

If card value between the first two cards (which are 6 and King) - for example, the Jack will be in the value between these cards - the player wins and gets the win according to the winning table.

If the third card, dealt on the table, is not in the interval between the value of the first two cards (does not fall into the Spread) or coincides in value with one of the first two cards - for example, if Three drops - players bet will be lost.

If 2 cards have a value equal to 1 (for example, a five and a six), then the game is considered as a draw - the player gets his bet back.

If two cards with the same value (for example, two Fives) are dealt, the dealer lays out the third card. This is considered the most interesting variant of the development of the Red Dog game: it allows the player to get the highest prize. In addition, this scenario is win-win for the player. If the third card has the same value as the previous two, then the player wins. And his gain is calculated with the maximum possible odds - 11 to 1 of the bet. If the third card does not coincide with the previous two cards, then the game is considered to be a draw - the player gets his bet back.

Game Strategy

Red Dog does not refer to intellectual games and does not require mental tension from the player. But still there is a strategy that increases the likelihood of a monetary gain in the game and lowers financial risks. In general, for the Red Dog applies elementary strategy (for example, Martingale). It is based on choosing the right moment to raise the bet and to reduce the risk of losing in an unfavorable scenario. In this, it is similar to the game of Blackjack.

Probability of winning

According to Theory of Probability, the casino's advantage in the Red Dog is 2.78%. If we compare it with the figures for other games, then it is minimal. So the probability of winning for a player here is very high. All depends on the size of the Spread. The smaller the Spread - there is less chance of winning, and therefore more profit from it. Actually, this is the gambling interest of the player. But in order to protect yourself from loss as much as possible, you should not double the bet in the range equal to 7 and less. With a minimum spread, the mathematical probability of winning is 1 chance out of 13. But, if player wins, his bet increases 5 times. However, with an increase in the bet rate, the advantage of the casino is greatly increased as well.

Also, the specifics of winning in the Red Dog depends on the quantity of the decks, more card decks are involved in the game, the more likely the player will win. This increases the chance of the same cards to be dealt by dealer, so more chances of win or draw.

The advantages of the game

  1. Red Dog is a gambling game with minimal mental and psychological pressure on the player. The winning of the participants of the game does not depend on the combination of the cards.
  2. Red Dog does not oblige players to constantly raise the bets. So even a person with a very small bankroll can enjoy the game.
  3. The risk is minimal, which makes it possible to experience gambling pleasure without large financial losses.
  4. The ability to control finances during the game: the participant can leave the game at any time, as well as independently determine the size of the bets and the possibility of raising them.
